With its smooth, clean lines and simplistic shape, it would be easy for one to deny the true complexities of Gerrit Rietveld’s “Zig-Zag Chair”. Made for the famous Rietveld-designed Schroder House, the Zig-Zag chair is comprised of four separate pieces of wood joined together by dovetail joints. This 1934 design is an expression of the "De Stijl" movement of which Rietveld was a member until 1928. This piece is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York and can function as much as a chair as it can a side table. Cassina, Italy is the exclusive licensed and authorized manufacturer of Gerrit Rietveld designs world-wide. The chair has the manufacturer’s label affixed underneath to verify its authenticity.
