Table 1 presents example statements from the transcripts relating to each situation
assessment category. In feature-matching cases, the managers commonly
reported being able to recognize the type of candidate (e.g., pillar or promoter).
Only 5% of instances could not be classified as involving feature matching or
story building.
Each decision was then examined to assess whether there was evidence that
the manager used mental simulation to evaluate his or her course of action. There
was evidence of the use of mental simulation for 39 of the 48 decision points
(81%). Examples include the following:
