Colocasia esculenta also known as ‘Taro’, ‘Dasheen’, ‘Elephant
ears’, ‘Cocoyam’ or ‘Potato of the tropics’, is a wetland
herbaceous perennial, found throughout the tropics andmuch
of the subtropics. It is an amphibious plant, fast emerging as
one of the problematic aquatic weeds of Kerala (India). Most
of the aquatic weeds, in general, have good growth rate and
they spread very fast over the water bodies and colonize the
surrounding marshy land areas too. Such uncontrolled, rapid
colonization of weeds diminishes the quantity and quality
of water in wetlands – eventually causing the loss of wetlands
