Clean Tech Media Award 2012
Lufthansa receives special prize for its burnFAIR project
Lufthansa received a special prize for its burnFAIR project at the 2011 Clean Tech MediaAwards ceremony, held in Hamburg on 16 September. The award honours Lufthansa’s commitment towards testing alternative fuels. On 15 July 2011, Lufthansa became the first airline worldwide to use biofuel in daily commercial operations. Over a six-month period, one of the engines of a Lufthansa Airbus A321 (D-AIDG) operating on the Hamburg–Frankfurt route will run on a 50-50 mix of biofuel and regular jet fuel. The purpose of this long-term trial is to gather experience and to collect long-term measurement data. It will also provide information about the impact of biofuels on the environment as well as on engine maintenance and engine life. And there is another positive side effect: during the trial period alone, Lufthansa expects to save about 1,500 tonnes of CO2. The use of biofuel is one element of Lufthansa’s four-pillar strategy, which aims to lower overall emissions and protect the climate.
