.Although we found that label use was associated with
healthier dietary behaviors such as lower fat intake, following
a special diet, and taking supplements, we did not find any
association between label use and BMI. Although some
research has shown greater label use among obese individuals,
the rate of obesity among this military population
(13%) is much lower than national estimates for 20- to 39-
year-old men (33%),13 although many of the soldiers were
overweight. The rate of overweight and obesity (56%) was
comparable to the estimate of 60% reported from a broader
survey of military personnel.4
