In 195 BCE, the founder of the Han dynasty performed ceremonies and animal sacrifice (such as pigs and ducks) to the spirit of Confucius at the temple in Qufu.
Later emperors enlarged the temple. Then during the Tang dynasty each Confucian school (for training scholar-bureaucrats) was expected to have a Confucian temple.
Generally, inside a Confucian temple there will be courtyards.
In the main temple in Qufu we can see steles (stone markers) in the courtyards commemorating the visits of emperors. The temple is maintained by Confucius’ descendants.
