practice. Shaller (2007) suggests that a supportive work environment is a central component of delivering effective person-centred care. He suggests that a bealthcare organisation should be'human-centred' not just patient-centred,meaning all chinicians, including managers and frontline staff, are engaged in creating an effective system for care. Therefore, offering communication skills training is not enough. Health professionals need supervision and time for reflection to develop their confidence in what has been described as a stressful and emotionally demanding area of care. Subsequently, the hope is that striving to maintain a supportive, collaborative environment will lay the foundations for more widespread use of HNAs (Balogh et al, 2011 ; Fann et al, 2012).
