At the temple, coconuts are offered to the deity, wherefrom the coir was collected. The dried coir pith was chopped into small pieces. It was then subjected to carbonization at 700 °C for 1 h using a tubular muffle furnace in indigenous experimental set up. A constant flow of 150 mL/min high purity (99.99%) nitrogen was maintained throughout the process of carbonization. The carbon so formed was then cooled to room temperature and washed with hot deionized water and 0.5 N hydrochloric acid until the pH of sample reached 7.0. The product was then dried in a hot air oven at 110 °C overnight.
