Golden apple snail is introduced to Asia from South America in the 1980s. The reason was to be food for people, however, sadly it became a major pest of rice. They eat young and emerging rice plants and they cut the rice stem at the base, destroying the whole rice plant. Golden apple snails are spread very fast through the flow along the canal, natural water distribution pathways and during the flood. Furthermore, they know how to survive themselves when there is no water by burying themselves in the mud and hibernate for up to six months. Normally these snales can damage young rice up to the 30 days old rice. Once the rice plants are more than 30 days, normally rice will become thick enough to resist the snails. Therefore, golden apple snail is a major problem in Thailand. In addition, some evidence shows that such country like Japan and the Philippines also experience the same situation too, so it could now be said as a global problem.
