Once disaster occurs, the importance of
securing communications quickly is obvious,
mobile services have been proven especially useful for understanding and sharing what is happening. On the other hand, we learned that
many mobile base stations will be either damaged or disabled, limiting the area of availability
for mobile services. In order to mitigate this, wehave started to deploy large zone base stations
to secure communications services efficiently
over densely populated areas. Such stations offer
a communication radius of 7 km, which is larger
than ordinary base stations. Currently, 104 of
these stations, or more than 2 for each prefecture, cover 35 percent of the national population, and these stations are installed in buildings
and towers that have high standards of earthquake resistance
