Over the last century, the search for new anti-microbial agents from plants had mainly been focused on tropical or sub-tropical plants; much less attention was paid to temperate plant species. However, it does not necessarily mean that there is no history of use of temperate plants in the treatment of infectious diseases. In Scotland, many early traditional healers were priests, and one of the oldest hospital where these monks, skilled in medicine, cared for sick or wounded travelers was a place called Soutra (Comrie, 1860).
