Another excellent paper on partner selection is Brookes and Altinay (2011). The paper provides an excellent review of the literature in terms of selection criteria for foreign franchising partners. It is very useful to split the criteria into partner-related and task-related. Both are important, though partner-related criteria seem to dominate in most studies. One suggestion would be to break down the partner-related criteria into technical and relational. For example, many of the partner-related criteria refer to the quality of the franchisee management team, their marketing skills, their financial skills, and local market knowledge. These might be termed ‘‘partner technical skills.’’ On the other hand, aspects such as trust and chemistry between partners could be termed ‘‘partner emotional skills.’’ The relative role of the two types of partner skills could be informative.
