Clarify
This stage begins before any discussion with the other individual. Clarify your concern into
a precise performance problem. Prepare supporting data and examples so that you are
ready to give a clear view of what you think the problem is.
Explain
Present your view of the problem to the individual clearly and objectively.
Discuss
Listen to what the individual has to say in response to your feedback and discuss the
issues until you arrive at a shared understanding of what is happening.
Agree
Seek an objective statement of the problem and what you are going to do about it.
Remember, without agreement, there can be no solution.
Review
Once you have agreed on what to do about a problem, set a review date to see if you are
both happy with the way the problem is being addressed.
