India was the Buddhist religion. After the Lanna kingdom of the Tai Yuan adopted Buddhism as its national religion, the people's wealth began to be displayed in the from of religious art in order to pay respect to the Lord Buddha.
ฺBuddhist art and architectural works were so abundant in Chiang Mai that the city was said to have "wat chon wat" or one temple against another. Artists from the Tai Yuan, Tai Lue and Tai Khoen were supported to create numerous valuable works during this period of Buddhist glory.
