Shrimp and sea bass are important seafood products of Surat Thani province, Thailand. The production
of farmed shrimp and sea bass was estimated to be 61,400 and 122 tons/year, respectively (SCFRD,
2012). The intensive culture areas are located on the estuary of Bandon Bay on the east coast of Surat
Thani. Contamination of heavy metals in the fishery products potentially resulted from wastewater
discharges from industrial manufacturers, as well as chemical leaching from agricultural uses. Cadmium
and lead are highly toxic trace elements and have no known role in biological systems. Cadmium
interferes with zinc in enzyme catalysis and key metabolic processes and is carcinogenic, teratogenic and
embryoidal to humans (Siegel, 2002). The adverse effects of lead have been recognized for many years. It
interferes with a variety of metabolic processes and is toxic to many organs and tissues including bones,
kidney, heart and central nervous systems. Copper and manganese are essential for normal metabolism,
growth and development of humans and other organisms. However, excessive intake of the elements may
affect human health.
