To test our hypothesis, football players at our institution were invited to participate in this observational study involving measures of weight and body composition using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at 3 time points: preseason, postseason, and spring season. We calculated changes in weight, lean mass, fat mass, and percent body fat at post-season (postseason minus preseason) and at spring season (spring season minus postseason). The mean change in each parameter was tested for significance (a change different than zero) and to see if there were differences by position, seniority, or the interaction between position and seniority.
