I think the colors in this picture help portray the depressiveness of the situation. The room is colored in an unappealing way (dirty-colored-creme for the walls and an off-putting orange carpet). The color of the boy's vomit-green shirt also makes him seem more unpleasant. If the shirt were a bright yellow then the boy would probably seem less threatening.
