Are you kidding me? Exams don't actually work! What should you do if 5 minutes after that exam, you remembered the answer you were thinking of? Does that mean if you remember 5 minutes earlier, it could be the difference for you becoming a lawyer or doing something else you really didn't want to do? It's not just and in fact, it's out right a nuisance to have to sit those.
Are they effective in testing your ability? I'd say not, because an exam can't cover everything, otherwise, people are going to get much worse and less accurate marks because they can't concentrate for as long as it would take for the exam to cover everything. The worst thing is when you study something and it's not on the exam! It only angers and agitates people that they are being defined by a number in which could change them from being their dream job, like a lawyer and then something else they totally despise but had to settle for!
Exams become a matter of luck about whether or not you're studying the right thing or if you're good enough to figure out what's on the exam! Some people do and in my classes, I have often guessed multiple exam questions and I even guessed my English exam topic question the day of it and prepared for it for practise of the exam. In conclusion, was my preparation for my exam defeating the purpose of it? Was after guessing the topic, was that exam really effective? I think exams shouldn't be as 'heavily weighed' as English exam question's or any question in any other exam for that matter, are being guessed by people with practical knowledge!
