Conclusion
Older people can be susceptible to dehydration and subsequently
to UTIs (Keller, 2010). In older people, UTIs
may increase the risk of falls (Wittenburg et al, 2014)
and therefore, diagnosis of the infection needs to be
prompt and accurate. The diagnosis and management of
UTIs should be based on local and national guidelines.
Having up-to-date knowledge of the disease and using
the guidelines will help to follow the basic principles of
management and enable appropriate and timely treatment.
In addition, good hygiene, hydration, nutrition, and
regular assessment of older people at risk may reduce the
lottery of traumatic injury and improve the quality of life
of patients (SIGN, 2013; NICE, 2014a; 2014b).
