After the stigmas of the flowers at day 0 (Fig. 2) were pollinated, compatibility of the cross and reciprocal cross between ‘cv. C’ and‘cv. B’ were investigated at 3, 6, 24 and 48 HAP (Fig. 2(2.13)–(2.16)),compared to ‘C-selfed’ and ‘B-selfed’ (Fig. 2(2.9)–(2.12)). For self-pollinated flowers of both cultivars (Fig. 2(2.9)–(2.12)), a large number of pollen grains were able to germinate on the stigmas; the pollen tubes grew through the style and started entering the ovulesas early as 6 HAP. For the cross ‘C/B’, very few pollen grains of ‘cv.B’ could attach and germinate through the style of ‘cv. C’ with in 24 HAP, and majority of the pollen reached the ovary at 48 HAP(Fig. 2(2.13) and (2.14)). For the reciprocal cross ‘B/C’, most pollen of ‘cv. C’ could attach, germinate and traverse through the style of‘cv. B’ at about 3 HAP and reach ovary within 48 HAP (Fig. 2(2.15)and (2.16)).
