The SC/PL technique is very simple to carry out and easy to manipulate. The
macro geometry of the scaffold is determined by the casting mold cavity. The
porous structure of the scaffold can be controlled by the content of the porogens
added and the size and shape of the porogens.40,41 Highly porous scaffolds with
porosities of up to 93% have been prepared using this technique.42 Researchers
have made efforts to further improve the interconnectivity of the scaffolds. For
example, centrifuging the polymer solution containing the porogen helps porogen
particles connect to each other and further improves the porosity and interconnectivity;
pre-fusing the porogen particles slightly improves the connected areas
between the particles which leads to larger interconnected channels in the scaffold;
and adding another kind of water soluble polymer besides salt into the polymer
solution further enhances scaffold porosity
