Muskrats and beavers can burrow into dikes or
obstruct discharge pipes. Muskrat damage can be
minimized or prevented by installing hardware
cloth (metal screen) vertically in the dikes or by
riprapping both upstream and downstream slopes.
The initial cost is small compared to replacing the
dike. If beavers are likely to be a problem, state
wildlife personnel should be consulted to develop
a plan to prevent their unwanted damming.
