T.winogradskyi was enriched by omelianski(1905) in Winogradsky columns kept for some months at room temperature in the dark. The cell mass was in the form of “bacterial plates”, i.e., discrete dense layers of bacteria, and could be kept alive in the laboratory for 2 years. Molisch (1912) enriched “T. bipunctata” from Black Sea mud which, when mixed with decaying algae was used as an H2S-generating sediment in a seawater-filled cylinder 20-30 cm high.
