Policy is partly responsible. Many European government have abandoned policies that used to encourage people to retire early. Rising life expectancy and the less generous benefit pension plans force old people to work longer to have a comfortable retirement. In addition to after-retirement finance, changing nature of work also plays a big role. Pay has risen sharply for the highly educated, and it continues to do so for today’s educated elderly who are highly skilled. While we used to believe that older age links to lower productivity, these days technological change helps to reinforce elderly work performance. Skills that complement computers, from management expertise to creativity, do not necessarily decline with age.
