Known to many as the founding father of the modern residential landscape architect in California, Thomas Church opened the category of “California Style” to the public. Church was known for blending the modern freedom of movement with traditional design principles. He was also known for turning outdoor spaces into living spaces or “rooms.” A famous design of his is the Donnell Garden in Sonoma, CA. With Lawerence Halprin and George Rockrise, they designed this iconic Modernist landscape for the Donnell family. It is popular for its unusual quality that offers a place of relaxation and play that represents the modern “California Style.”
