About the Artist
Manet painted the 'House at Reuil' in 1882, a year before he died. It showcases Manet's controlled spontaneity, feeling for composition, brilliant use of colour and penchant for modernity.
For many years Manet spent his summer holidays at this house. 'His chosen viewpoint is unconventional with the cut off tree trunk blocking the view of the entrance portico where the viewers eye would naturally centre, forcing it back into the foreground to enjoy the fresh greens of the garden set against the warm creams of the house'.
