Nevertheless, there are disadvantages of GM foods. To start with, GM foods are not relevant in helping to solve famine. It is argued that there has never been a serious famine in any country, even during the famines in Ethiopia, if the government had money and exported food. GM foods also yield unpredictable and uncertain results in consumers. This is because of the lack of knowledge of how genes work and what the effects that GM foods might have on our bodies. In addition, GM foods are more expensive and less safe than local materials, which are also resistant to insects. Moreover, adapting the use of GM foods may lead to other problems later (Fuscoe, Garside and Prodromu, 2010). According to Whitman (2000), plant mutation, food allergies, and farmers’ inability to afford GM crops are some undesirable effects of using GM products.
