In 2011, Protocol 9 published by the Academy of Breastfeeding
Medicine Protocol Committee stated that caution
should be exercised when recommending drugs to assist
initiation, maintenance, or augmentation of human milk
synthesis. Stronger ties in hospital to Baby-Friendly standards,
increased availability of education for health care
professionals, and standard practice guidelines for breastfeeding
assessment prior to medication introduction into the
breastfeeding dyad may promote breastfeeding self-efficacy
and increased satisfaction of mothers and healthier babies.
