The FIPQ was shown to be structurally valid and reliable
with the latent variables labeled “Family Timeline” (five items) accounting
for 7.7% of overall variance with a Cronbach’s alpha of .76 and “Family Illness
Coherence” (three items) accounting for 5.8% of overall variance with a Cronbach’s
alpha of .88. The FIPQ—Diabetes factors similarly to the original IPQ—Diabetes
(Scollan-Koliopoulos et al., 2006). Scoring was identical to the IPQ described
previously. Participants were given a list of close blood relatives (excluding their
own children) from which they selected only one family member with diabetes
whom they remembered the most and were instructed to think about that relative
when answering the questions.
