The first step in the statistical treatment of data is to establish the distribution. A graphic
representation of the distribution is usually the most useful form for initial evaluation.
Next, the statistical distribution is characterised with a measure of its central value, such as
the mean, the median, or the mode.
Finally, the spread or dispersion of the distribution is determined in terms of the variance or
the standard deviation.
