Registry records from the Alpaca Registry International from the early
1990s were sorted by fleece type, and included 20,000 huacaya registrations
and 1762 suri registrations. In this time period registration
of all offspring was routine, with minimal preregistration selection and
therefore minimal skewing of data by elimination of offspring prior to registration.
Imported animals for which parental type was unavailable were
removed from the analysis, retaining only animals for which fleece type
of both parents was available and for which pedigrees were established
by DNA verification of parentage.
