Description of the FACET program
FACET was designed to support educators in accommodating the needs of young
children with challenging behaviors. The program was developed based on four key
principles derived from the literature on PBS and functional assessment: (a) challenging
behaviors are linked to multiple factors, including features of the classroom environment;
(b) evidence-based interventions should be designed to promote development of
supportive learning environments and positive behaviors; (c) a collaborative, team-based
approach maximizes the effectiveness of assessment and intervention; and, (d)interventions are most effective when they are applied early and implemented as planned
(Sugai et al., 2000). In FACET, functional assessment data were used to develop a
comprehensive behavior support plan that was implemented by teachers for target children
in their classrooms. FACET interventions were designed to incorporate (a) strategies for
teaching children new skills or behaviors, (b) changes in environmental variables, and (c)
positive consequence strategies to support appropriate behaviors.
