The Youth Physical Activity Promotion (YPAP) model (Welk, 1999) provides a
theoretical basis for exploring the relationships among parental influence, children’s
perception of PA, and children’s self-perception. The YPAP model presumes that
children’s involvement in PA behaviour is predominantly determined by a
self-evaluative construct (i.e. a person’s perceived degree of control over personal
behavior) and cognitive assessment of perceived outcome (i.e. the belief about PA
behaviour). In the YPAP model, parental influence is regarded as a component that is
able to facilitate children’s PA behaviour directly and promote children’s PA
participation indirectly by enhancing the two self-evaluative domains
