Over the last few years several publications have discussed the technicalities of indicator development notably Sirakaya et al. (1999), Miller (2001) and WTO (2004), but most authors adopt a parochial approach to indicators, focusing narrowly on the tourism industry and the resources on which it depends. Nevertheless, the World Tourism Organization has perhaps done more than any other body to advance the study of sustainable tourism indicators. From a rather narrow impact measurement approach adopted in initial studies of the Tourism and the Environment Committee, the latest addition to their work, Indicators of Sustainable Development for Tourism Destinations – A Guidebook, is much more comprehensive.
