Today I’m at the materials recovery facility and I’d like you about how we transform all these piles the Greenway into Malta which becomes compost. We receive green waste from several different sources. it’s picked up at the curb from households abounds the peninsula and delivered to us. it’s also brought in by landscapers and also by do it yourself percent pickup trucks at the rate. we charge for clean green is roughly half then the solid waste disposal rate so it really pays to keep the material clean and bring it into a separately were also able to separated green waste from some other mixed waste the that we receive here at our materials recovery facility any here we receive more than 30,000 tons of the material what happens next as we take this green waste. we loaded onto a conveyor and then it goes up into our grinder and it’s ground up in the mall. I’m standing in front of a pile of scrap wood this is all material, that we’ve recovered in our materials recovery facility from load the mixed waste word is one of the top 10 materials, were able to recycle here at the Monterey regional Waste Management District and in armor will pull out more than 5,000 tons per year a look at this pilot scrap wood it’s hard to imaging ti can be converted into a high quality landscape product but that’s exactly what we’re able to do from here it gets loaded into our electric grinder think it’s ground up into chips now here, we see the finished wood chips at this point it’s a high quality landscape product ready to be used as based helping conserve moisture in the soil and Peter weed growth this is a 100 percent recycled product made right here ready to go into local landscape you can purchase wood chips by the time that the district scale or you can buy wood chips by the baguette the last chance Mercantile one of the unique features of our green waste and wood waste recycling program is we’re grinding the materials up in an electric-powered grinder for this machine is running of electricity that we product in our landfill gas to energy program if you’d like to learn more about bed please see our landfill gas to energy video available on our website so all that mulch made from landscape trimmings that we saw over at the materials recovery facility come over here to the compost site couple hundred yards away.
I’d like to introduce Keith day from the Keith a company this is an example of one o the public-private partnerships here on our. He does the compost expert he that mulch and converts it into compost
Can you tell us how you do it gave yes rom Altiria from the district we put into when Rose mixed in which our existing compost it takes four different ingredient to make compost oxygen nitrogen and carbon and water sa you see here our compost turners going through a really in the compost pil what this does is add oxygen to the when Road to keep the temperature up with the moisture as we bring the temperature up to 160 degree until all pathogens. we see the bacteria that could be in the compost going through the cycle, will turn these rows up to mouth eight to ten times through an eight-week process when there’d completed. we run them through a screening process to get it to the preferred particle size that we would like for our customers what this does is get any contaminations any metal nay imperfections material so we have a clean makrkable material for our customers are complicit we produce is available with the distri-for sale to the public. We also sell up and down Sailnes Valley to love the local farmers landscapers nurseries using the wood chips and high quality compost that’s produced out here at the district is a great way to put 100 percent recycled products to work in your own landscape so often with recycling materials are sent long distances to be recycled into new products and in recycling we have an old saying. If you’re not buying recycled you’re not really recycling using these products are locally made help close the loop and makes recycling sustainable thank you for joining us on this tour up the green wood waste processing and compost production out here at a moderate regional Waste Management District if you’d like to learn more about programs see one o our other videos on website at www.mrwmd.org thanks lot.
