Immediately after a crime has been committed, some tourists may be unaware that they
have been the victims of a crime. This phenomenon is especially true in cases of crimes
of distraction such as pickpocketting. In these cases, tourists may not even be aware that
someone has robbed them until such time as they seek to pay for something. Even then
tourists may simply assume that they have left their money in the hotel room by mistake.
Thus by the time victims are aware that they have been robbed, the perpetrator is long
gone.
