CONFLICT-struggle between people who disagree.
ex. Little disagreements between friends
ex. Violent battles between groups
Positive-settling disagreement and moving towards constructive action
Negative-when they arise for the wrong reasons and are not handled well they can make life stressful.
REASONS FOR CONFLICTS
SITUATIONAL CAUSES
1.Ex. Your friend does not sit at the table with you
2. PERSONALITY DIFFERENCES
Ex. You are sensitive to the feelings of others but your friend likes to be very honest. Both you and your friend want to be in charge
3. POWER STRUGGLES
Ex. You work with someone who tells you what to do
DIFFERENCES THAT LEAD TO CONFLICT
ISSUE OF RIGHTS
-your right to listen to music conflicts with your neighbor’s rights to sleep
ROLE EXPECTATIONS
-each role you have creates expectations of your behavior (roommate) (practice: solve the conflict between a wife who does not like to cook and a husband who thinks women’s role is cooking)
VALUE VIOLATIONS
-a boss might value schedule but an employee might value flexibility.
SOLVING DIFFERENCES
1.If you want your rights to be respected you have to fulfill your responsibilities. (independence>maturity)
Role conflicts can be solved through empathy
Value differences can be solved through communication-understand that people can have valid opposing views
Personality clashes can be solved by associating with compatible people.
