Guideline 14: Use meaningful file names for images and other media
When downloading media from the web for use in a digital story, the file names should be rewritten
using descriptive information without any spaces in the file names. The original image may
have a nonsense label that will be meaningless later, and may even cause problems when inserted
into some software applications. In the new file name, hyphens and underscores should be used
instead of spaces. For example, the following image of the rings of Saturn was downloaded from
the NASA website with this actual file name: 216200main_pia10246‑516.jpg
Renaming this file so that it more accurately describes what the picture shows, such as Saturnrings.
jpg, would be a much better choice.
