On the
other hand, reduced seed moisture to 6  1% SMC maintains
all physiological and biochemical reactions affecting deterioration
in the quiescent stage. Assuming the possible dangers of
over-drying (Ellis et al., 1996), we have restrained the drying of
onion seeds to 6  1% SMC followed by packaging in moisture
impervious containers and low temperature (25 8C) storage for
enhancing the storability of onion seeds under the most fluctuating ambient temperatures and RH of this region. Onion
seeds with lowered SMC (6.5%) either packed in hermetically
sealed pouches with silica gel (Doijode, 1995) or packed in
moisture impervious bags and placed in a desiccator with silica
gel retain high germinability for longer periods. It could be
inferred that storage conditions with low RH, i.e., 20–25%
(Walters et al., 1998), temperatures ranging 20–25 8C (Vertucci
and Roos, 1993) and suitable seed invigouration treatments
(Dearman et al., 1986) would enhance the seed longevity.
