SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Patients with a GTD exhibit light to heavy bleeding and even hemorrhage. Bleeding can be
bright red or brown, appearing similar to prune juice. Anemia may result due to bleeding.
Additionally, as a result of the proliferation of tissues and the presence of clotted blood, the
uterus may appear larger than expected for gestational age. Despite an enlarged uterus, fetal heart
tones and movement are absent. Serum hCG levels are also increased and patients may
experience hyperemesis. Symptoms of gestational hypertension before 24 weeks’ gestation are a
strong indication of gestational trophoblastic disease.
