Approaching information based on their georeferences can be important in several contexts. Researchers looking for information about the environmental changes in a certain area over time, information about the wildlife in a given area or population growth in a certain city might want to limit their searches to geographic areas. Students searching for information on youth hostels in cities they plan to visit or on which attractions there are in a given area might also want to limit their searches based on geographic properties. The availability of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in handheld devices like mobile phones, Personal Digital Assistants and even cameras has triggered a need for finding information about objects in the vicinity of the device. Targeted information can be delivered to such devices based on the location of the device. Allthough some research has already been done in geographic information retrieval, a lot stands to be achieved. Some of the challenges and possible solutions will be described in this article
