In 2011, almost 64 million MT of fish, crustaceans and mollusks
were harvested from aquatic farms worldwide. More than 75% of
this production was achieved through the use of industriallymanufactured
feeds. This contrasts markedly with aquaculture in the
1980s when production was dominated by extensive practices, lowtrophic
level fish and filter-feeding species (FAO, 2012).
