(a) More male participants than female participants
expressed the importance of trusting in expert knowledge
(positive impact) and, conversely, felt the lack of
respect and concern shown by staff made their situation
worse (negative impact);
(b) Four participants with schizophrenia, who presented
with strong paranoid delusions or frequent auditory
hallucinations, indicated the more negative impacts of
restraint, including a lack of empathy and a feeling of
powerlessness. They wondered whether these negative
feelings might have been influenced by their psychotic
symptoms, and their own difficulties in coping with
these symptoms;
(c) As mentioned in Section 3.1.1 concerning safety and
trust, those participants who had psychopathic personalities
and conduct disorders, were more supportive of
the use of restraint to ensure the safe control of their
violent behaviors.
