The focus of the present investigation is on granular flow in air slides, devices in which the interstitial air plays a critical role in determining the rheological behavior of the gas-particle mixture. The typical air slide consists of a rectangular granular flow channel having a porous bed, beneath which is a plenum chamber. Air is directed into the plenum chamber at high pressure. It is then forced upwards through the porous bed, whereupon it acts to support the bed of granular material, and fluidizes it, permitting the solid particles to flow readily down the chute at angles much lower than the angle of repose of the granular material. Airslides are used to transport dry particulate materials over distances hat can be as long as 1 km (Holt, 1973). A typical user is the aluminum industry, which employs airslides for moving alumina particles to and from ships and railway cars.
