Conventional traps and filters mounted with suction systems are able to capture some of the amalgam waste, and the rest ends up into the municipal sewer system.
Additional systems should therefore be used. Adegbembo et al. (2002)showed that ISO certified separators (International Organisation for Standardisation 11143, 2008) used in connection with dental devices can result in a 99.4% reduction in mercury concentration in the discharged waste water.
