The people waited outside.
The marquis spoke gently to Griselda. “Griselda,” he said, “your father says that we may marry. Please take me for your husband. But I must first ask you this. Will you promise always to do what I tell you to do?”
“My Lord,” She said, “I am only a poor girl. You have asked me to be your wife. If you will let me look after my father in my new life, yes, I will marry you, and I will always do everything you tell me to do.”
“That is enough, my dear Griselda,” said Walter. He took her hand and led out to all the waiting people. “Here is my wife,” he said.
Some ladies came forward. They came into the little house and helped Griselda to wash. They had brought beautiful clothes for her, and Griselda put them on. They put a crown on her head.
