Concerns about privacy appear to be increasing. For example, Google received a great deal of criticism when it announced that it planned to use software to scan the subject field in e-mail headers as well as the body of messages in order to select specific pop-up ads likely to be of interest to the recipient. Cookies are another topic of concern. A cookie is a text file created by Web site and stored on a visitor's hard disk. Cookies store information about what the user has done on the site. Most Web sites create multiple cookies per visit in order to make it easier for visitors to navigate to relevant portions of the Web sites. Browsers can be configured to not accept cookies, but doing so is likely to cause many Web sites to not function properly. It is important to note that cookies are text files, which means that they cannot "do" anything besides store information. Nevertheless, some people are worried that the information collected in cookies violates their privacy.
