In many parts of the world people still celebrate festivals at the time of the harvest. In west africa people celebrate the new yam festival called, called lri-ji.yams, a kind of sweet potato,are an important food in countries such as nigeria.In nigeria the lbo people have a yam harvest festival each august.the night before the festival,they dispose of the last year's yams. a village elder or chief eats the first new yam.then he offers the harvest to the gods and to the ancestors of the people.finally,he divides the yams among the people. on festival day, the whole village celebrates.friends and relatives come to the village to share in the feast. the people eat yams until they feel full. people take part in traditional dances all day and all night.
