In this study, two quantitative indicators based on inhalation risk assessment were proposed in order to gain an overall assessment of indoor air quality (IAQ) in the monitored environments. In particular, two indicators were obtained by considering the reference values used to describe chronic health effects (carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic) of VOCs. The first indicator was the IAQ Total Hazard Ratio Indicator (THRI) which concerns non-cancer risk. It was based on the comparison of the daily ambient concentrations with their respective chronic non-cancer inhalation level, the point at which no adverse effects are expected for a single VOC. These
reference values are expressed as Reference Concentrations (RfCs),by the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS), or as Minimum Risk Levels, or as Reference Exposure Levels (RELs), by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA).Reference values (see Table 2) were extracted from databases provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (IRIS, 2013), the California EPA Chronic Reference Exposure Levels (CalEPA), the Provisional Peer Reviewed Toxicity Values for Superfund (PPRTV, 2013), and the Health Effects Assessment Summary Tables (HEAST, 2013). Priority was given to the IRIS as it was the most extensive database. The hazard ratio (HR) of each compound was calculated by dividing its daily average concentration (C), expressed in mgm3, by its corresponding Reference Concentration
(RfC) expressed in mg m3. Moreover, the total Hazard ratio (total HRsite) was calculated to assess the global inhalation exposure risk for each hair salon as a sum of the single HR determined for each compound detected at the same sample site (total HRsite ¼PHRi). According to Ramírez et al. (2012), a TRHI equal to 1 indicates a minimal inhalation exposure risk.
