These standards define scientific literacy as the ability to: a) ask
and answer questions about the natural world, b) read, understand, and evaluate science articles
in the popular press, c) identify scientific issues underlying political decisions, d) take
positions on issues that are informed by science and technology, e) evaluate scientific arguments
based on data, and f) develop scientific arguments using appropriate data and reasoning (National Research Council, 1996).
